Olive Oil For Skin: 15 Amazing Uses

Olive Oil For Skin: 15 Amazing Uses

Olive oil is more than a delicious salad dressing. It's also a must in every woman's beauty routine! Read on to learn 15 cool hacks using olive oil for skin!

1. Olive Oil Face Mask

There are hundreds of olive oil masks to make your skin glow. Here are three of my favourite recipes:

For Intense Moisturizing

Winter is coming and with it comes dry flaky skin. There is no better solution to your winter woes than olive oil. Simply whisk together one egg yolk, one tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil, and one mashed banana.  The enzymes in the banana will provide extremely gentle exfoliation, while the egg yolk and the oil intensely nourish and moisturize your skin.

For Problem Skin

Olive oil can clog pores. Acne sufferers should only use this mask before cleansing their face. But combine the powerful antioxidant properties of olive oil with the antibacterial wonder that are honey and tea tree oil and you have virtual magic. Mix together a tablespoon of olive oil and honey. Add 15 drops of tea tree oil and gently mix it together. Apply for 10 to 15 minutes.

Brighten And Glow

This final recipe combines the power of turmeric (it is antiseptic, antibacterial, and an antioxidant among other things) and the awesomeness of olive oil. Throw some soothing milk in the mix and you have the perfect brightening face mask to make you slay your look to whatever event it is that you have coming up! Stir together a tablespoon of milk and a teaspoon of olive oil. Add two teaspoons of turmeric powder and mix until homogenous paste forms. Apply for around 10 minutes (until it dries)!

2. Dry Scalp Remedy

Dandruff is often caused by a dry scalp. Did you know you can use olive oil for skin on your head, too? It works surprisingly well for keeping the flakes at bay. I like to mix lemon juice, water, and olive oil in equal parts and then apply it to my scalp. The acid in the lemon juice exfoliates the scalp while the olive oil provides nutrients and moisture to keep the skin happy and non-flaky!

3. Makeup Remover

Olive oil is one of the best emergency makeup removers out there. It's a pantry staple so you can find it in virtually every house! Use it to take off your mascara at your boyfriend's house (I know I always forget the makeup wipes) or when you forget you've run out of cleanser. The best part? It even removes waterproof makeup!

4. Oil Cleansing: The Best Skin Cleansing Method You Have Never Even Heard Of!

Oil cleansing is a recent discovery I made and it completely transformed my beauty routine. Essentially, your skin is naturally covered in oils. The sebum can contain all sorts of dirt and harmful bacteria. But when you apply water to all that, water and oil don't mix. If you choose to clean your face with oil, even if it's counter-intuitive at first, you will see a visible improvement! Apply two-three tablespoons of pure extra virgin olive oil to your face. I like to do it after a shower. This way my pores have already opened up and are ready to let the dirt flow out. Then, massage the oil with circular motions into your skin. Really get in there, it doesn't matter that there will be a lot of oil left. Finally, use a clean, warm, damp towel to gently wipe the oil off. You will install feel your skin cleaner and rejuvenated!

5.Homemade Exfoliants

Sugar scrubs will banish dry skin for good. As we enter the colder months, our skin need a little extra TLC. Why not give it just that with a homemade olive oil and sugar scrub. They are ridiculously easy to make and they give you soft skin for days! The basic ingredients are simple: olive oil and sugar. The oil's job is two-fold. On one hand, it helps break down the dirt stuck in your sebum. That's why it is a great weapon against body acne. On the other hand, olive oil is also pretty good at sealing in moisture and keeping your newly exfoliates skin healthy and glowing. Oh, and if you decide to use brown sugar or add a couple of drops of essential oil, you will reap even more benefits.

6. Shaving Cream

This must be one of my favourite uses of olive oil for skin. I run out of shaving cream all the time! Instead of running to the drugstore, just look in your pantry. Olive oil helps the razor glide and it protects you from burns. Once again, you have the added benefit of moisture. Your newly shaved skin will thank you for the extra nourishment!

7. Cuticle Conditioner

Cutting your cuticles is no way to live. Simply warm some olive oil (I like to drop some lavender essential oil in there, too) and massage it over your fingers. Because I'm lazy, I usually do this while I'm watching my favourite shows. It is very relaxing and it instantly softens the skin on your cuticles. Now you can just push them back. No need for cutting or other harsh methods!

8. Nail Growth Serum

While we are on the topic of nails, frequent nail massages can help them grow long and strong. If you struggle with nail breakage, look no further than olive oil. It's the ultimate easy nail growth serum!

9. Eczema Remedy

Eczema can be so frustrating... But olive oil comes to the rescue! This is one of the mildest, least irritating oils you can use on your eczema. Doctors are even recommending it to newborn babies, it will not make you flare up. Instead, it will provide comfort and soothe your skin for good!

10. Cracked Heel Repair Balm

Cracked heels aren't pretty. Fortunately, now you can have perfectly soft feet year-round (yes, even in winter, when your skin starts cracking more than usual)! Here a recipe to help your feet get back in top shape (adapted from Wellness Mama): Ingredients: ¼ cup olive oil ¼ cup coconut oil 3 TBSP beeswax ¼ cup of magnesium oil (because magnesium deficiencies can cause cracked heels) 10 drops peppermint essential oil (for disinfection and a feeling of freshness) Instructions: Heat the coconut oil with beeswax and olive oil over medium heat. Once they are melted and homogenous, set them aside and let them cool When the mixture is at room temperature, pour it into a blender. Start blending and slowly add in the magnesium. It's very important that you do this drop by drop. Finally, once the magnesium is well incorporated in the balm, add the essential oil and whip well until it's all combined. You can store the product in your fridge for up to two months. Use it after each shower and kiss cracked heels goodbye!

11. Makeup Brush Cleanser

Here is another simple DIY project. It will give your makeup brushes a deep clean (bye-bye acne-causing bacteria) and keep them as soft as ever. You simply have to mix antibacterial face wash with olive oil in a 2:1 ratio (two parts wash to one part olive oil). Pour the mixture on a clean plate and wet your brushes in lukewarm water. Dip the brush into the makeup cleansing liquid and massage the bristles to help all the dirt break down. Finally, rinse your brush under lukewarm water, with the bristles always facing down. You don't want the water to get into the tube because it might loosen the glue. Dry them off on a kitchen towel and you're done. They will be as good as new!

12. All-Natural Highlighter

You will be surprised at the amazing glow olive oil can give you. Simply rub a couple of drops on your cheeks for a barely-there dewy look!

13. Anti-Aging Serum

Olive oil is a potent antioxidant. This means it can neutralize the free radicals that surround us. Since free radicals are the basis of cellular ageing, using olive oil on your skin can give you a fresh and youthful complexion for decades. Mediterranean women have been swearing by this trick for centuries. It's no wonder Monica Belucci looks so good at 54!

14. Hand Moisturizer (a.k.a. The Winter Wonder)

If your skin is anything like mine, you know the struggles that winter brings. Fortunately, there is a simple recipe to banish crusty dry skin forever. Mix a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice with some olive oil and slather it on your skin. Put clean latex gloves on and leave the moisturizer for at least 15 minutes. The lemon will dissolve any dead skin cells, while the olive oil pampers the healthy skin underneath. I like to do this treatment every Sunday for perfect hands even in winter.

15. Eyelash Growth Magic

Eyelash extensions? Who needs that? Your natural lashes can grow long and strong if you apply olive oil every night before bed. You will see a significant improvement in less than a month! Yes, it's not as fast as fake lashes but it's almost free and completely natural!
